Enjoy Halloween, Sober.

As one of the top drinking holidays of the year, navigating Halloween sober can be frightening in itself. We don't want you to dread being exposed to intoxicated zombies and vampires all night long, we want you to get the most out of this creepy-fun holiday as possible.

This Halloween season, enjoy one of these spooky activities and celebrate your sobriety.

Go to a movie:

If you're looking for a scare, there are plenty of local theaters showing some horror movie classics!

Halloween (1978) 10/29 at Pickwick Theatre at 7:30pm

10/30 at Hollywood Blvd Theatre at 7:00pm and 9:30pm **costume party**

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

10/29, 10/30, 10/31 at AMC Yorktown at 9:40pm

10/29, 10/30, 10/31 at AMC Streets of Woodfield 8:00pm

Beetlejuice (1988)

10/30 Marcus Theatre Addison at 7:00pm

10/30 Marcus Theatre Aurora at 7:00pm

Psycho (1960)

Have a pumpkin-carving party:

A night in with some friends might be just what you needed! Throw down some newspapers, put out some snacks, brew some apple cider or create some spiced mocktails, and invite your friends over with a pumpkin in hand. Want to take it a step further? Ask everyone to show up in costume.

Enjoy local pumpkin patches and haunted houses:

Stay at home and relax:

Stay in and pass out candy for the little ones in the neighborhood. You can cook yourself a nice meal or order a pizza, light a fall-scented candle, and watch movies. Maybe even end your night a little pumpkin pie.

Start new traditions with sober friends:

One of the cool things about being sober is that you get to reimagine the usual ways you spend the holidays. You can make up your own rules and traditions. Throw a themed party with pumpkin-flavored everything, invite friends over for a sober potluck/costume party, or get a group together and enjoy a night out to a fancy dinner (we hear restaurants are pretty empty on Halloween night).

Hang with the kids:

Remember how exciting was Halloween when you were a kid? Re-experience a little bit of the original joy with the kiddos, because it’s a lot easier to access your inner Halloween child when you aren’t drunk when it’s time to go door to door.

Hang out with friends or family who have kids and go trick or treating with them. Many towns and neighborhoods have bonfires and costume contests, too. Live near the Hillside, IL area? On Halloween night at Hillside Commons, Hillside & Washington Avenues the annual Bonfire starts shortly after 7:15pm.

Skip it all together:

And maybe most importantly, there’s always the couch. Sometimes on holidays, your couch can be your best friend. A hot bowl of popcorn and a good book will call your name, even as the pumpkins flicker in your neighbor’s windows, and Thriller blasts from the party downstairs.
